Tummy time and playing with your baby 0-6 months

Tummy time is so important for an infants development, it helps their neck muscles get strong so they can hold up their own heads. It gives them arm and leg strength that will eventually help them to scoot, then crawl and eventually walk. But how do you make it interesting for baby and for you, I will say it is easier to entertain the baby.

skip hop treetop floor gym for babyI have this floor gym from Skip Hop, I like the more muted colors and the fact that there are no lights or music. The owl jingles, one bird rattles, there is one that you squeeze and it makes a creek sound but that's as high tech as this mat gets. That is exactly what I wanted to get my Little Man. He will have a lifetime of electronics and things that require batteries or charging. As he is getting older, 11 weeks now he is discovering more and more about this mat. In the last few days he's become mesmerized by the leaves and textures on the mat, where as up until this point he was unaware of these features.

Something else I have is a long mirror I bought at Target for $5.99 I have this lying on the floor for Little Man to look at himself while lying on his side or to encourage him to look up while propping himself up on his arms. He likes to look at the baby in the mirror and smile at him. The mirror is one of his favorite things at almost 3 months old now. He love making faces and "talking" to the baby in the mirror.

Another thing I made for tummy time at this age, I found some high contract tummy time images online. I printed them and laminated them for durability. Being a teacher I have my own personal laminator that I got a few years ago. This is useful to laminate recipe cards, along with items for baby. I highly recommend a laminator.

As baby has grown a little after he was 4 months old he wanted to "stand" more and had some core strength so I invested in an activity table. I choose this Oribel portaplay, it had a lot less going on and did not require batteries. We have loved this table, he enjoys all the toys and over the last month has grown to understand them more. It also converts into a table for children when you no longer need an activity table. So he will be able to use it for the next few years. The toys are attached well but are easily removed, which is nice if you want to take some away to keep things interesting and reintroduce them at a later date.

Another thing I splurged on and will not get compensated if you purchase is the Lovevery kits. These were a splurge but so far the Little Man has loved all the toys. I also love the included guide, as an early childhood teacher I understand children's development but I have always focused on children 4-10 years old so this is helpful to remind and teach me what skills he needs to be working on. The toys are very high quality and have stood up to a lot of chewing and smacking on his green play table. I do love them and look forward to the future boxes. They also have a floor gym I lusted after but did not get.
